Assessments
Children are referred for an Occupational Therapy assessment when they are experiencing difficulties in one or more of the tasks of childhood. This could be riding a bike, self-care tasks such as tying shoelaces or classroom challenges such as handwriting or using scissors.
Full assessments take approximately three hours and involve using a range of assessments to give an in-depth picture of a child’s strengths and areas of difficulty. This will uncover the gaps in underlying foundation skills which are responsible for them struggling with daily tasks.
All assessment sessions will vary depending on a child’s age, area of functional difficulty and diagnosis. This will be designed in collaboration with parents/carers and educational establishments.
REPORTING
The child’s Occupational Therapy needs will be documented in a summary report or full report depending on the requirements of the assessment. This will be established prior to assessment sessions.
THERAPY
Following the initial assessment, a treatment plan will be designed to meet the child’s individual needs which may include 1:1 therapy sessions. DOT can offer a range of therapy approaches to meet the individual needs of children and can offer therapy in at home, in school or a private therapeutic setting.
PROGRAMMES
It may be beneficial for a child to have a home or school programme to follow in order to develop skills throughout their day, improve participation and enjoyment. Programmes will be individualised to work towards achieving target areas. These programmes can be monitored and updated regularly upon request.
ANNUAL REVIEWS
Following a full assessment and therapeutic input, DOT is able to provide Annual Review reports and attend annual review meetings upon request.
